About conference

The architectural and urban layouts of the cities can be considered as manifestation of culture and civilization. There is a consensus that knowledge production is deeply embedded in intellectual and cultural context of a civilization. Therefore, this expanded knowledge is often interwoven with the philosophical and religious beliefs of that civilization.

The advent of Islam in the 7th century brought fundamental changes in philosophical thought of different societies. Architecture and the built environment,as cultural ingredient of a civilization, became a through manifestation of the expanded ideology. The distinctive Architectural and urban forms, play as a platform for disclosure of the Muslims societies. For all these reasons,Islamic architecture and urbanism could reflect the spiritual thoughts and serve as an allegory of the Islamic culture. Throughout the countries, the basic principles of Islamic architecture have synchronized with religion and beliefs system. The transforming corpus of civilizations, emanating from this ideological change, represents fresh and innovative doctrines in architecture and urban discourses and practices. Hence,it can be said that Islamic architecture and urban form reflect the Islamic values and pave the path for citizens to practice the lifestyle promoted by Islam. While the notion of Islamic architecture and urban form adheres to a set of principles, its evolution has been based upon the ongoing needs of society and environment.

Formation of ‘Islamic city’ plays a key role in practicing the lifestyle promoted by Islamic thoughts. Therefore, the concept of Islamic city is far more than physical aspects and elements of a city. Nowadays cities in the world of Islam face different environmental and social challenges from excessive energy consumption and environmental pollutions to the problems of identity and sense of belonging. To this end,for reviving the authentic Islamic architecture and urban form, which during the course of time has lost its main meanings, the innovative actions should be taken into account. These challenging issues encouraged us to organize the International Congress titled “Avant-garde Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism in Islamic Countries" in Mashhad (Iran). Through the cooperation of academic communities as well as the relevant institutions, the Congress aims to (re)call for reviving of the Islamic architecture and urban form. In this regard, the maintain of the Congress is to express the theoretical foundations of Islamic architecture and urbanism in order to give some practical suggestions for improving the current challenges in Islamic countries. Moreover, through recognition of current situations in the Islamic world,we will try to interweave the gained knowledge into the new technologies for establishing worldwide communications. We also hope that the raised topics in the Congress would bring about a new era for Islamic architecture and urbanism in Iran and other Islamic countries.
